Year-End Lettering and Inking

So I'm ending 2015 in a completely unexpected way: drawing new Borders Worlds material for the upcoming Dover Publications, Inc. collection coming in Fall 2016! There will be an all-new 30-page conclusion to the 340-page saga that grew from a back-up feature in Megaton Man in 1985 to seven bi-monthly issues (1986-87) and a one-shot (Marooned #1, 1990), plus unpublished art and other goodies. Lettering on the conclusion is now complete; inking in progress. (Whatever possessed me to put so much cross-hatching into this art?!!) Here's a look:

Size of original: 9" x 12", pen and ink on Clearprint Design Vellum.

  1. I woke up to peruse blogs I'd been missing and came across the great news that Border Worlds was returning. Along with Mars, Border Worlds was my favorite SF series. I used to own every issue, including the fabled Marooned one-shot. It was my real introduction to the style of illustration in the tradition of Milton Caniff. Unfortunately, I lost those issues, along with several other of your books

But here it is, returning, collected and with new material. I'll be buying it as soon as it's released. Will you be doing interviews to support the release?

  2. Don, congratulations on this development with "Border Worlds." I'll be buying a copy (although I do have all the original releases). I'm also looking forward to your new Megaton Man work with great interest. Best of luck!

  4. There's been some shuffling at Dover and some delay, but the contract for BW calls for late 2016 or 2017, which I'm still expecting. All of the new art for the closing chapter has been completed, and I have tons more story material if the franchise suddenly catches fire. Thanks for the kind words and you will be the first to know about any updates!

  5. You were always one of the great figure artists, with your exaggerated realism.
